Mould / Mildew Testing Service
Mould and mildew are commonly found on surfaces within buildings after floods or in indoor areas with poor ventilation or humidity problems.Different species of fungi grow at different temperatures. Mesophilic fungi seem to like the same temperature range as humans, exhibiting optimal growth within the range of 18-27°C. Cryophilic fungi can grow at very low temperatures, around freezing point. Thermophilic fungi are capable of growth at temperatures above 60°C.
Different species of fungi grow at different relative humidity (R.H.) levels. Again, many fungi seem to grow within the R.H. levels similar to those preferred by humans. Optimal growth generally occurs within a range of approximately 65-90%; however, some fungi can grow at much lower RH, while others can grow in almost saturated (100%RH) conditions.
Water activity actually takes on more importance than RH as far as determining the conditions that are suitable for fungal growth. Water activity is a measure of the amount of moisture available at the surface of a material.
Fungi convert the substrates they occupy into food by secreting enzymes. These digest the substrate into smaller, more readily usable components (glucose or an equivalent) which is easily absorbed from organic materials.
The most common fungi groups that are found in buildings are;
- Ascomycetes are the largest group of fungi to colonise buildings; they produce masses of dry, readily dispersed spores.
- Basidiomycetes generally have large fruiting bodies, which are used to disseminate their spores
- Zygomycetes are relatively common in house dust; they require relatively simple carbon sources and wet conditions; most common moulds belong to this group
The most common health complaints associated with indoor mould exposure are:
- Irritating cough
- Nasal and sinus congestion and infections
- Sore throat
- Difficulty breathing (wheezing)
- Irritated eyes
- Skin rashes
- Upper respiratory infections
Cogent Partners offers a comprehensive mould, fungi and bacteria sampling and analysis service. We also offer advice on emergency responses to mould resulting from water damage, Relative Humidity and ventilation problems.
